About the M151 MUTT – Armored Military Police Vehicle:

The 1/4-ton utility 4x4 was the workhorse of America’s militaries from WWII through the end of the Cold War. By the 1960s, the famous Jeep of WWII was replaced by the M151 or MUTT. The M151 had an integrated body design that created a more spacious interior, as well as an independent coil suspension to better traverse rough terrain. Initially designed and produced by Ford Motor Company, M151 production contracts were awarded to Kaiser and AM General Corp. The M151 was a mainstay that was outfitted for many different missions that included transport, searchlight, armed patrol, anti-armor with a recoilless rifle, and much more.

One area of service was as an armored military police vehicle. MUTTs served MP units as the primary transport vehicle. However, traversing the landscape of Vietnam proved more and more treacherous as the VC proliferated throughout South Vietnam. To protect the passengers and to offer better security for convoys, the MUTT was fitted with in-field upgrades. These mainly consisted of an armored hull that was bolted onto the existing MUTT frame as well as the addition of a coaxial M60 machine gun for fire support. An example of the up-armored M151 sits at Fort Hood.
