With more than 600,000 built, the Jeep became an iconic vehicle of the war, and Dwight Eisenhower claimed it was one of the U.S. military’s most decisive tools. Journalist Ernie Pyle summarized, “It does everything. It goes everywhere. It’s as faithful as a dog, as strong as a mule and as agile as a goat. It constantly carries twice what it was designed for, and still keeps on going.” Its reputation for toughness and dependability made the Jeep a valuable medical transport vehicle, able to reach and retrieve wounded soldiers from the front lines and carry them over rough terrain.
