About the StuG III Ausf. G – WWII German Assault Gun:

Finding success as both an assault gun and a tank destroyer, the Sturmgeschütz III was Germany’s most produced fully tracked armored vehicle and second most produced armored vehicle of any kind. The StuG was designed as mobile artillery, with the speed to keep up with advancing infantry and the firepower to help keep the advance moving and avoid the trench-warfare stalemate of the previous war. The StuG combined a tank chassis and a thickly armored casemate, in which early versions mounted low-velocity howitzers to take on fortifications. However, as Germany’s invasions encountered heavier tanks, later versions carried increasingly powerful high-velocity guns to enable the StuG to fulfill an anti-tank role as well.

By far the most common variant, the StuG Ausf. G debuted in late 1942 and served through the end of the war. It featured an enlarged casemate to carry the powerful 7.5 cm StuK 40 L/48 gun, which was effective against both defensive positions and enemy armor. The armor was upgraded and a square shield was added to the loader’s MG34 machine gun. The four-man crews praised the StuG III for its low profile and good protection, which allowed them to ambush enemy tanks from the hedgerows or Normandy, to the mountain passes of Italy, to the steppe and forests of the Eastern Front
