About the Sd.Kfz.164 "Nashorn" - WWII German Self-Propelled Anti-Tank Gun

With its long, powerful gun protruding from the front, the Nashorn, or rhinoceros, tank destroyer may call to mind its powerful, horned namesake. But unlike the rhinoceros itself, the Nashorn featured no thick, protective skin; its thin armor provided minimal protection. Instead, the Nashorn relied on stealth, distance, and sheer firepower. Its tactics proved successful, as the Nashorn became one of WWII’s most dangerous tank destroyers. 

Entering service in 1943, the Nashorn was built around the superb 88 mm Pak 43 L/71, the same long-barreled gun later mounted on the Tiger II. At long range, this weapon could punch through virtually any Allied tank, often before the enemy even knew they were under fire. Unlike heavy vehicles that carried similarly powerful guns, the Nashorn was light and fast, built on a hybrid Panzer III/IV chassis and carrying only minimal armor. Its tall, open-topped fighting compartment made it vulnerable to artillery, aircraft, and infantry, but it also gave crews excellent visibility, which was crucial for long-range ambushes. 

As a fast tank destroyer, the Nashorn attempted to strike first, strike hard, and relocate before the enemy could respond. The vehicle was particularly successful on the Eastern Front, where vast open terrain allowed it to exploit its exceptional range. When used improperly, losses were heavy. But when deployed correctly, making good use of cover and supporting forces, the Nashorn was devastating.
