During the Cold War, Western intelligence agencies estimated the Soviet armed forces to have a strength of approximately 2.8 million to 5.3 million men. To maintain these impressive numbers, every man of military age was required to serve a minimum of three years, until conscription was reduced to two years in 1967. In 1955, the Soviet Union entered into the Warsaw Pact with its Eastern European allies, which established military coordination between the Soviet forces and their socialist counterparts. The Soviet army modeled the Eastern European armies on its own, anticipating a potential confrontation with NATO.
