The deck of an aircraft carrier is an exciting place. The complexity, potential dangers and limited space require deck crews to operate with minimal errors. To keep things simple, the deck crew uniforms are color-coded to indicate responsibilities on the carrier:

• Purple: sometimes referred to as “Grapes”, responsible for handling aviation fuel
• Blue: responsible for plane handling, including operating tractors and elevators
• Green: catapult and arresting crews, they also handle cargo and air wing maintenance
• Yellow: officers for plane handling, catapulting and arresting
• Red: responsible for handling ordnance
• Brown: air wing plane captains, petty officers
• White: various, including quality control, inspectors, liquid oxygen crews, and medical personnel
