About the Tiger 214 – WWII Hungarian Heavy Tank:

The use of the formidable Tiger I was not limited to the German Forces of WWII. Some of it's allies received them as well. One of those allies was Hungary. In recognition of its contribution stopping the Soviet Dnieper Carpathian Offensive in Western Ukraine in April 1944, the local Hungarian forces received about 15 vehicles. The training was conducted at Nadworna, Ukraine in May 1944. Two armor companies of the Hungarian 2nd Armor Divison received them as replacement for their Hungarian made vehicles. The Tiger I Ausf. E-s came from three different German Heavy Tank Battalions, respectively the 501st, 503rd and 509, and they kept their original German camouflage and markings. 1st Armor Company of the 1st battalion was commanded by Captain Janos Vedres, while the 2nd was commanded by the famous Hungarian Tank Ace, First Lieutenant Ervin Tarczay.

The Tigers proved to be an effective weapon in the hands of the Hungarians. The great number of smoldering wrecks of Soviet tanks and self-propelled guns at the ambush at Saturin and at Hill 386 are the proof of that. Although the Hungarians were able to achieve local successes with their Tigers, the tide of the war could not be changed. The number of overwhelming enemy forces and the lack of maintenance and towing capability put an end to the use of Tigers in the Royal Hungarian Self Defense Forces by the end of November 1944.
