About the SPAD S.XIII – 94th Aero Squadron:

The First World War witnessed the rumbling expansion of warfare into the air, as the opposing militaries harnessed the brand-new technology of the airplane. Fighter squadrons tangled high above the trenches, and the late 1917 emergence of the French Spad S.XIII helped seize Allied air superiority. Built around the powerful new geared version of the Hispano-Guiza V8 engine, the Spad S.XIII entered service within months of its first flight and immediately proved successful. With almost 9,000 built, the biplane was one of the war’s most-produced aircraft.

All but one of the United States’ fighter squadrons flew the Spad S.XIII. Equipped with two Marlin 1917 or 1918 machine guns, the Spad was popular with American pilots. One of the first American squadrons to join the fight was the 94th Pursuit Squadron, embracing the ‘hat in the ring’ mentality of their country entering the war by painting the hat and ring emblem on their Spad S.XIIIs. The squadron produced many aces during its time on the Western Front, including Captain Eddie Rickenbacker, who destroyed twenty aircraft during the Meuse-Argonne battle.
