About the SeaRAM® Ship Defense System

SeaRAM®is an anti-ship missile defense system used by the United States Navy. The SeaRAM® was designed and manufactured by Raytheon and is used as a primary defense mechanism against attack from anti-ship missiles. This system offers improved self-defense by increasing the defensive range from hostile attack. The SeaRAM™is a direct descendant of the MK15 Phalanx close-in weapons systems (CIWS) of the 1980s, which is also produced by Raytheon. Today, Raytheon is upgrading the older Phalanx system so both SeaRAM® and Phalanx systems can work in conjunction with each other to protect the fleet.

Of course, the most noticeable feature of the SeaRAM® is its stacks of missile launchers. The Rolling Airframe Missile, or RAM, is a fire-and-forget missile that is designed to provide quick response to incoming attacks. The missiles are guided by an infrared guidance and autonomous dual-mode passive radio frequency (RF) system, which is jargon for an advanced autonomous targeting system that is near impossible to compromise. Once launched, the missile does not require any shipboard support as it engages its target. It has a twenty-one missile capacity and can track multiple threats at once. The SeaRAM®, coupled with the Phalanx, offers unprecedented protection for the United States Naval fleet. With the ability to mount on any naval vessel, the SeaRAM® offers comfort and security to the crews of those ships.
