During the German invasion of Poland in 1939, the cavalry comprised 10% of the Polish army. Unlike their traditional role in previous conflicts, the cavalry was no longer seen as a unit capable of breaking through enemy lines. Instead, they served as a mobile reserve for the Polish armies and primarily employed infantry tactics: dismounted soldiers fought as standard infantry. Despite media reports at the time, particularly those concerning the Battle of Krojanty, the Polish cavalry did not engage German tanks. However, the Polish cavalry did successfully counter German tanks at the Battle of Mokra.
